Stone Type Specifics
What makes stone different from one another? There are several classifications of stone, and Scorpio Stone specializes in limestone, marble and granite.
For a rock to be considered limestone it must be of a calcium carbonate compound. All limestone starts as the floor of a shallow tropical sea and is continually formed as soft sediment interacts with salt water. There is usable stone as young as 30 years that can be found in the Bahamas, and some limestone is known to hold impurities such as cola bottles. Limestone is comprised of ooliths (pieces of sand, shell or sea animals) and a cement of calcium carbonate.
Marble is formed when limestone is exposed to a combination of high temperature and pressure. The calcite from limestone recrystallizes to form a denser rock; geologists refer to this as metamorphism. White marbles are formed from very pure limestone, and the veins of colour are due to the presence of other minerals when the marble was formed.
Granite is made of crystalline structures: feldspar, quartz and mica. These crystals are created as magma below the Earth's crust is pushed through small fissures in the crust. As the magma passes the mantle it starts to cool. The longer the cooling process of these minerals takes the larger the crystalline structures of the granite will be once it is harvested. An extremely fast cooling magma would only show microscopic crystals, an example of this would be a volcanic eruption. Granite gets its colour from the different minerals in the area of which it was formed.
